In short

Allparts Rochdale buys scrap and end of life vans across Rochdale and Greater Manchester, from car derived vans up to 7.5 tonne trucks. Vans are paid by weight, at a set rate per tonne, and because a long wheelbase panel van weighs roughly half as much again as a family car, a van is normally worth noticeably more than a car of the same age. We pay more again for a van that still starts and drives, because commercial engines and gearboxes are the stock that moves fastest off our shelves. Collection is free within 40 miles, payment is the same day by bank transfer, and we raise a proper invoice alongside the Certificate of Destruction so the disposal is on your books correctly. We are an Environment Agency Authorised Treatment Facility, licence EAWML/53593.

How it works

1

Ring with the registration

We will tell you what the van is worth on the phone. If it is on finance or still in a company name, say so and we will tell you what is needed.

2

We collect, free

Anywhere within 40 miles of Rochdale. Driveway, yard, site or depot, and we recover non runners onto the truck.

3

Paid same day, with the paperwork

Instant bank transfer as it goes on the truck, an invoice for your books, and the DVLA notified with your Certificate of Destruction.

Why a van is worth more than a car

Scrap is weight. Not age, not mileage, not how it looks. That is why a tatty fifteen year old Transit can be worth more than a tidy five year old hatchback, and it is the single thing most people get wrong when they ring round.

TypeFor exampleRoughly weighs
Car derived vanCaddy, Connect, Berlingo1,400 to 1,600kg
Medium panel vanTransporter, Vivaro, Expert1,700 to 1,900kg
Large panel vanTransit, Sprinter, Crafter2,000 to 2,400kg
Luton or box vanTransit Luton, Movano box2,400 to 3,000kg
7.5 tonneBox van, tipper, curtainsider3,500kg and up

Typical kerb weights, for comparison only. A family car sits around 1,300kg, so most panel vans are half as heavy again. Your actual figure depends on the van in front of us, which is why we price it on the registration rather than off a table.

Things that catch van owners out

Finance has to be settled

A van on HP or lease belongs to the finance company, not to you, so it cannot be scrapped until the agreement is cleared. We cannot issue a Certificate of Destruction for a vehicle you do not own. Get it settled in writing first. It is the most common reason a collection has to be turned around at the gate, and five minutes on the phone saves it.

Your name is on the side

Signwritten vans carry your company name, your number and sometimes your website down the road with you. Tell us and we will make sure the livery goes with the panels rather than out of the gate on a vehicle you no longer control. Most yards will not think to ask.

Leave the racking in

Ply lining, steel shelving, roof bars, a tow bar, a tail lift, a fridge unit. None of it needs stripping out and none of it is a problem. Steel racking and a tail lift are weight, and weight is what you are paid for.

If it runs, say so

A running van is worth more to us than the same van that does not, because the engine and gearbox go on the shelf instead of in the crusher. On commercials that gap is wider than on cars, since a working van engine or gearbox is some of the quickest stock we sell. Plenty of yards pay the same either way. We do not.

Common questions

Is a van worth more than a car for scrap?
Usually yes, and by a long way. Scrap is paid by weight at a set rate per tonne, and a long wheelbase panel van weighs roughly half as much again as a family hatchback. A Transit or a Sprinter is simply a bigger lump of metal than a Focus. Age and condition do not change that, weight does.
The van is still in my business name and on finance. Can I scrap it?
Not until the finance is settled. A vehicle on HP or lease is not yours to dispose of, it belongs to the finance company until the agreement ends, and an Authorised Treatment Facility cannot legally issue a Certificate of Destruction for a vehicle you do not own. Settle it first, get written confirmation, then ring us. We would rather tell you that now than turn up and not be able to take it.
Can I have a VAT invoice for my accounts?
Yes. Most vans we take come from sole traders and small firms who need the disposal on the books, so we raise a proper invoice with the vehicle, the registration and the date. You also get the Certificate of Destruction, which is the document that proves the vehicle was disposed of lawfully at a licensed facility.
My van has my company name and phone number on the side.
Tell us when you ring and we will make sure the livery is removed or destroyed with the panels rather than leaving the yard on a vehicle. It matters more than people expect. A signwritten van sitting on a forecourt with your mobile number on it is still advertising you, and you have no control over what it is being used for.
Do you take vans with ply lining, racking or a tow bar still in?
Yes, leave it all in. Ply lining, shelving, roof bars, a tow bar, a tail lift, a fridge unit, none of it is a problem and none of it needs stripping out before we collect. Steel racking and a tail lift add weight, which works in your favour.
What about non runners, MOT failures and write offs?
All fine. Blown engine, failed MOT, insurance write off, no keys, flat tyres or no wheels at all, we recover it onto the truck. It does not need to be on a public road either, we collect from driveways, yards and building sites with the right permission.
How far do you collect, and what does it cost?
Free collection anywhere within 40 miles of Rochdale, which covers all of Greater Manchester, most of Lancashire and into West Yorkshire. There is no charge and nothing is deducted from the price for it. You are also welcome to drive it in to the yard, and we pay a bit more if you do, because it saves us the truck run.
Are you licensed to scrap commercial vehicles?
Yes. We are an Environment Agency Authorised Treatment Facility, licence EAWML/53593, with upper tier waste carrier registration CBDU155342. The licence covers end of life vehicles up to 3,500kg as standard and we take everything up to a 7.5 tonner. Only an ATF can legally depollute a vehicle and issue a Certificate of Destruction.

Scrapping a car rather than a van? The process is the same and the page for it is scrap my car. If you have lost the V5C or you are not sure what happens with the DVLA, we have written the whole thing out on scrap car paperwork.
